High power binocular viewing can be challenging. The higher the magnification, the more sensitive the binocular is to movement and vibration, and the more difficult it is for our eyes to follow the image. Some people experience fatigue, dizziness, and headaches.
Stabilized binoculars solve this by slowing down the movement of the image, and smoothing out the rapid jerky movements. Increased levels of detail are visible as a result.
This wonderful technology works using a piezo gyro vibration sensor to detect movement in azimuth (pan) and elevation, and make corresponding corrective movements to the prisms which are mounted on a balanced motorized gimbal.
The Bushnell Stableview binocular can be used three ways:
- Normal mode: Binocular corrects for most vibrations and movement. Well suited when panning is required.
- Fine mode: rapid vibrations are canceled to a higher degree. Less suitable when panning is desired.
- No stabilization (off): Binocular can still be used when batteries die, with a bit greater difficulty.
With fine mode activated, you can literally jump up and down and still read license plates at a distance.
The Bushnell Stableview offers up to 3° of vibration correction, enough for most hand shakes, and suitable for use from a rough moving vehicle. Some competing models only offer 1° of correction, which may not be enough for all users and situations.
