Coverslips (cover glass) are ideal for covering specimens mounted to slides.
Coverslips are considerably thinner than glass slides. The are used to hold subjects down flat against a slide, and are suitable for any magnification, as long as the working distance of the objective is at least the thickness of the coverglass.
Temporary wet mountings using water can last up to a week. More permanent mountings can be achieved using a mounting resin, such as Canadian Balsam, clear nailpolish (don't get nailpolish on the subject!), or an optically clear epoxy.
