In the era of high sensitivity and small pixel cameras, do you need a large and heavy guide scope? The answer is negative. Due to the high resolution (smaller pixels size) of the guide camera sensor and the increase in the pixel density, the guide scope does not require a long focal length in order to detect the movement of the star image. And as sensitivity is improved, a large aperture is rendered unnecessary. Furthermore, as the focal length of the guide scope is shortened, the field of view increases, so that potentially more guide stars will be within a fixed field of view. Based on these trends in sensor technology, QHYCCD introduced the miniGuideScope.
QHYCCD designed the miniGuideScope to match the famous QHY5L-II planetary/guide camera. However, it is compatible with all of the QHY5II and QHY5III Series cameras. By using a back-illuminated Series III camera, the sensitivity and accuracy of the system is further improved.
The miniGuideScope has a focal length of 130mm and a diameter of 30mm, for a compact f/ratio of f/4.3. The weight is only 111g (3.9 oz). The use of broadband anti-reflection coatings on the achromatic lens assures reduced ghost reflections and hence high contrast. The simplicity of the objective provides image quality that is better than typically delivered by multi-element industrial telephoto lenses of similar focal length. Sharper star images provide better feedback regarding tracking error, so the accuracy of the system as a whole is improved.
The front threaded focusing design with locking screw greatly simplifies the focusing mechanism without compromising accuracy. A number is engraved on the front focus ring to make it easy to remember the focus position. The thumb screw can be replaced with a short set screw to permanently lock the focus once achieved.
